TGSRTC Unveils Retrofit-Led Push to 2,800 E-Buses in Hyderabad by 2027

The state operator moves from pilot to rollout through awarded retrofit contracts, supported by a ₹392 crore charging buildout.

Overview

  • TGSRTC awarded diesel-to-electric conversion work to Sai Green Mobility for 200 buses and Kalyani Powertrain for about 40 after tenders issued on September 15, 2025.
  • Hyderabad currently has 325 electric buses operating from six depots, with 175 more slated to join the fleet this year.
  • Charging will be added at 19 more depots, with proposals filed for 10 new depots and 10 dedicated charging centres at an estimated cost of about ₹392 crore.
  • A 2023 pilot converted a Musheerabad depot diesel bus to electric, now running under Uppal depot, demonstrating retrofit viability.
  • Officials describe the programme as a first-of-its-kind effort by a state-run transport utility and say the expansion is intended to cut pollution and shift more trips to public transport, with VC&MD V. Nagi Reddy urging public support.
