Overview
- Transport for London announced on Wednesday that it will designate 200 additional roads as School Streets, aiming for a full rollout by 2030 to limit motor traffic during school drop-off and pick-up times.
- The scheme builds on more than 800 School Streets already in place and relies on individual borough councils to create each restricted zone using suitability data TfL supplied in 2024.
- As part of the walking and wheeling action plan, TfL plans to install 1,000 new zebra or signalised pedestrian crossings by 2031 and to add pedestrian countdown timers to every new signalised crossing.
- TfL is also reprogramming crossings near schools so the green man appears immediately after the button is pressed when possible; 472 crossings already use that setting and 18 show a continuous green until a vehicle is detected.
- TfL and the mayor frame the measures as a way to cut local air pollution, lower road danger for children and help shift travel toward walking, cycling and public transport in pursuit of the 80% sustainable trips goal for 2041.
