TfL Begins Trial of No-Flash Radar Speed Cameras Across Nine London Boroughs

The pilot will test 4D radar units for speed enforcement only as part of the Vision Zero push.

Overview

  • Ten trial sites on 20mph or 30mph roads will be installed over the coming weeks in Haringey, Tower Hamlets, Havering, Croydon, Hammersmith and Fulham, Brent, Hackney, Ealing and Sutton.
  • The units pair 4D radar with 4K colour imaging, require no in‑ground sensors or visible flash, and can monitor up to five lanes of bi‑directional traffic from a single camera.
  • Transport for London says the devices will be used solely to enforce speed limits, even though the manufacturer markets additional capabilities such as red‑light detection.
  • The Metropolitan Police endorse the test as a modernisation of enforcement under Vision Zero to deter dangerous driving and reduce road casualties.
  • Reports differ on trial scale, with most citing 10 sites and at least one noting 20 identified locations, and TfL plans to assess performance before any wider rollout.
