Texas Waives Sales Tax on Emergency Supplies Saturday Through Monday

Texans could save about $2.4 million, according to the Comptroller.

Overview

  • The sales tax break, which runs from 12:01 a.m. Saturday, April 25 to midnight Monday, April 27, applies statewide with no purchase limits or exemption forms.
  • Qualifying items include batteries, flashlights, radios, first-aid kits, tarps and coolers under $75, hurricane shutters and emergency ladders under $300, and portable generators under $3,000.
  • Online orders qualify if processed during the window, but delivery, shipping or handling charges that push a price over the cap make the entire item taxable.
  • Excluded items include medical masks, cleaning supplies, gloves, toilet paper, chainsaws, plywood, camping gear and vehicle or boat batteries.
  • With hurricane season starting June 1, officials urge buying now to avoid pre-storm sellouts even though Colorado State University projects a slightly below-average year with continued Gulf Coast risk.
