Texas Sets Tax-Free Weekend for Emergency Supplies, April 25–27

State officials cast the holiday as a push to stock disaster kits before hurricane season.

Overview

  • Texans can buy qualifying emergency gear without sales tax during the three-day holiday that begins at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.
  • Portable generators under $3,000 qualify, while emergency ladders and hurricane shutters must be under $300.
  • Many small items are exempt if priced under $75, including batteries, flashlights, first-aid kits, radios, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, tarps, and phone chargers.
  • Online and phone orders qualify if the purchase is completed during the window, and shipping or delivery fees count toward the item’s price cap.
  • The exemption has no limit on how many qualifying items you can buy, but several goods are excluded such as medical masks, cleaning supplies, camping supplies, chainsaws, and plywood.
