Texas Sets May 26 Primary Runoffs, With CornynPaxton Topping the Ballot

Only voters who stick with their March party can cast a runoff ballot, unless they skipped the primary.

Overview

  • President Donald Trump said he will endorse either John Cornyn or Ken Paxton in the GOP Senate runoff and ask the other to exit, and Paxton said he will stay in the race regardless.
  • Both parties’ attorney general contests advance to May: Republicans Mayes Middleton vs. Chip Roy, and Democrats Nathan Johnson vs. an uncalled opponent as the Associated Press has not finalized the second spot.
  • U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales heads to a GOP runoff rematch with Brandon Herrera after admitting an affair with a former staffer; House Republican leaders urged him to drop out, and he said he will not.
  • Additional notable runoffs include Railroad Commissioner Jim Wright vs. Bo French, the GOP primary in Congressional District 9 (Alex Mealer vs. Briscoe Cain), and the Democratic primary in District 18 (Christian Menefee vs. Al Green).
  • Key dates and rules: voter registration deadline April 27; early voting May 18–22; May 26 runoff election day; voters who did not vote in March may choose one party’s runoff, and Harris County logged a record 565,000 primary voters.
