Texas Jobs Hit Record 14.4 Million After May Rebound

The gain signals a short-term rebound that puts Texas ahead of national job growth.

Overview

  • The Texas Workforce Commission reported Friday that Texas added 17,800 nonfarm jobs in May, raising total nonfarm employment to about 14.419 million.
  • Over the past year the state added 98,000 jobs, a 0.7% annual increase that outpaced the national growth rate of roughly 0.3%.
  • Trade, Transportation and Utilities led monthly gains with 7,100 jobs, while Leisure and Hospitality added 3,900 and Mining and Logging added 3,800, and construction posted the highest annual growth rate for the 22nd month at 2.1%.
  • Texas’s civilian labor force rose by 6,800 in May and the not-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 4.3%, with wide metro variation from Midland’s 3.1% to Eagle Pass’s 8.6%.
  • State officials credited policy and workforce programs for the rebound but the TWC numbers are produced with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and remain subject to revision, and analysts note the gains follow a steep April drop and mask uneven local outcomes.
