Texas Executes Cedric Ricks for 2013 Killings of Girlfriend and Her 8-Year-Old Son

The Supreme Court declined a stay sought over alleged racial bias in jury selection.

Overview

  • Ricks, 51, was executed by lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit on March 11 and pronounced dead at 6:55 p.m. CDT.
  • He became the second person executed in Texas this year and the sixth in the United States in 2026.
  • The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles earlier denied his requests for a 90-day reprieve and for commutation.
  • Survivor Marcus Figueroa, who was 12 at the time of the attack, watched the execution as Ricks apologized to him and other relatives in his final statement.
  • Ricks was convicted of capital murder in 2014 for fatally stabbing Roxann Sanchez and her son Anthony in Bedford; he fled to Oklahoma after the killings and was arrested there, and his later appeals over shackling and jury selection were rejected by higher courts.
