Texas Democrats Seek Probe of Ken Paxton’s Voter Registration

An initial secretary of state review could send the complaint to the attorney general’s office which critics say requires an independent special investigator.

Overview

  • Reporting by ProPublica and The Texas Tribune found Paxton voted six times in two years using a Collin County address that public records and a divorce filing suggest he left in June 2024.
  • The Collin County Democratic Party filed a formal complaint about Paxton’s May primary runoff vote on July 14 asking the Texas secretary of state to investigate possible illegal voting.
  • Secretary of State spokesperson Alicia Pierce has said the office will conduct an initial review and may refer the matter to the Texas Office of the Attorney General under state law.
  • Paxton’s campaign denies wrongdoing and says he is a lawful registered voter while legal experts and Democrats say the attorney general’s office cannot credibly investigate its own chief and should hire an outside special investigator.
  • The complaint has also been shared with the Collin County district attorney and elections office and could matter politically because Paxton is the sitting attorney general and the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate.
