Tesla Launches Lower-Priced Model 3 and Model Y With Fewer Features

The launch follows the expiration of the $7,500 U.S. EV credit, prompting doubts that a $5,000 cut will broaden demand.

Overview

  • New Standard trims start around $36,990 for Model 3 and $39,990 for Model Y, roughly $5,000–$5,500 below the next trims after Tesla renamed Long Range to Premium.
  • Orders are open now, with Model Y deliveries targeted for November–December 2025 and Model 3 deliveries expected December 2025 into January 2026.
  • To reach lower prices, both cars use single‑motor rear‑wheel drive, a smaller usable battery of about 69–69.5 kWh, and list an EPA estimate of 321 miles on 18‑inch wheels.
  • Features cut on the Standard trims include Autosteer, the rear passenger touchscreen, heated rear seats, front seat ventilation, some audio hardware, and the Model Y’s panoramic glass experience now replaced by a headliner.
  • Shares fell about 4–4.5% after the announcement as analysts questioned whether modest cuts offset the lost federal credit, noting many buyers would still pay more than pre‑Sept. 30 out‑of‑pocket costs.
