Tesla Cuts Model Y Entry Price in India and Simplifies Lineup

Tesla says the change aims to broaden access to its cars through a lower entry price, new financing plans, expanded charging/retail networks.

Overview

  • The company announced on Friday, May 29, 2026 that it is launching the 2026 Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive at Rs. 50.89 lakh (ex-showroom) and will discontinue the Premium Long Range RWD.
  • Tesla says the new Premium RWD carries a WLTP-certified range of up to 500 km, a 0–100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds, a larger 16-inch front touchscreen and an optional Zen Grey cabin; deliveries are scheduled to begin in July 2026.
  • The rejig leaves a two-variant India lineup: the five-seat Premium RWD at Rs. 50.89 lakh and the six-seat Model Y L Premium AWD at Rs. 61.99 lakh, creating an Rs. 11.1 lakh gap between them.
  • To lower ownership barriers, Tesla is offering finance plans with EMIs starting around Rs. 39,990 per month based on a seven-year loan and Rs. 6 lakh down payment, and it is expanding retail, after-sales and Supercharger locations.
  • The move follows sluggish early sales for imported Teslas and comes against India’s high import duties on fully built EVs, so the company is betting on price, equipment upgrades and charging network growth rather than local production or expanded autonomous features.
