Tesla Begins Rolling Out FSD V14 Lite to Older HW3 Vehicles

The compressed HW4-derived update aims to improve safety and parking for legacy cars while preserving Tesla’s rule that a driver must supervise the system and paid hardware upgrades are needed for unsupervised autonomy.

  • Tesla has started delivering FSD V14 Lite to early testers of Hardware 3 (HW3) cars and plans a multi-week, feedback-driven rollout to roughly four million HW3 vehicles.
  • V14 Lite is a compressed version of the HW4 V14 driving-behavior neural models adapted to HW3 cameras and compute so older cars can run larger, newer networks within their limits.
  • The update adds specific improvements including better navigation lane changes, stronger pedestrian and traffic-light recognition, smoother steering and fewer unnecessary slowdowns, plus automatic parking, automatic unparking, and full reverse-assist.
  • Tesla says HW3’s hardware limits — especially its memory bandwidth, which the company has said is about one-eighth that of HW4 — prevent unsupervised full self-driving, so V14 Lite still requires a supervising driver with hands on the wheel.
  • Owners who want unsupervised FSD must pay for hardware upgrades by trading in for factory-equipped HW4 cars or arranging a full retrofit of compute, cameras and wiring at Tesla’s planned retrofit centers.
