TenneT Awards GE Vernova–Seatrium BalWin5 Offshore Converter Platform Contract

Works begin in 2026 with Southeast Asian fabrication for a 2032 commissioning.

Overview

  • The 2.2 GW HVDC link will connect North Sea wind to an onshore converter at Bremen-Werderland via a 325 km sea and land cable system, with commissioning planned for 2032.
  • GE Vernova will supply the complete HVDC technology plus the onshore and offshore converter stations, while Seatrium will design, build, transport and install the platform.
  • Work is slated to start on 1 January 2026, with most fabrication at Seatrium yards in Singapore and Batam before installation in the German North Sea.
  • The award is the consortium’s fourth under a 2023 framework with TenneT that deploys standardized 2 GW-class connections with about 200 MW of design headroom.
  • Seatrium said the win lifts its FY2025 new orders above US$4 billion, and BalWin5 is expected to serve projects including the 1 GW N-9.4 site secured by TotalEnergies.
