Tenerife Declares Island Emergency as Storm Therese Brings Snow, Flooding and Travel Disruption

Officials expect weather alerts to remain in place through the weekend, extending restrictions and safety warnings across the Canary Islands.

Overview

  • Tenerife activated its Island Emergency Plan from 3pm Wednesday, closing roads and hiking trails, shutting Teide National Park due to snow, and suspending outdoor events.
  • Aemet issued yellow and orange warnings for severe winds, torrential rain, flash flooding and rough seas, with forecasts of up to 300mm of rain in parts and significant snowfall above 1,800–2,000 metres.
  • Air travel has been disrupted with dozens of cancellations and diversions reported since Wednesday, while most flights operated on Friday with delays; airlines and AENA urged passengers to check schedules.
  • Schools closed across several islands on Thursday and Friday as authorities reported power outages, fallen street lights and multiple rescues in coastal areas and ravines.
  • The storm moved from La Palma to Tenerife and is extending to Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, with forecasters expecting gradual weakening late in the weekend but continued instability.
