Temporary LIRR Platform Opens at Shinnecock as Practice Rounds Expose Early Delays

County Road 39's temporary platform with added LIRR trains is testing local traffic plans before the U.S. Open.

Overview

  • LIRR, the USGA and local agencies ramped up service for practice rounds on Monday and Tuesday, and those runs produced morning road congestion and some rail equipment delays that forced early adjustments.
  • The temporary elevated County Road 39 station is operational and can handle 12-car trains; organizers expect roughly 75,000–80,000 riders to use the stop over the tournament week.
  • The railroad has scheduled no fewer than 168 train movements for tournament week, plans to add seven to eight extra trains on event days, lengthen consists and station more than 150 staff to manage crowds.
  • Local authorities and the USGA activated mitigation measures including an express shuttle lane on Sunrise Highway, remote parking with shuttle service at Calverton, volunteer traffic control and real-time alerts through MTA apps and text advisories.
  • Officials say the early practice-round disruptions and a separate Tuesday accident that closed County Road 39 show the operation will require active, real-time management to prevent longer delays for fans and residents during the tournament.
