Tempe Couple Surrenders in $4,000 Cognac Theft Case

Police say the case may be tied to a theft ring targeting businesses nationwide.

Overview

  • Tempe police said Tuesday the suspects, Channel Miller, 34, and Matthew Steve, 32, turned themselves in and now face a felony theft charge.
  • Surveillance from May 4 at the Three Thirty Three restaurant shows a woman slip a 750-ml Louis XIII cognac worth about $4,000 into her purse as a man acted as lookout.
  • Restaurant staff said the pair used a fake reservation, ordered starters, stepped out to smoke, then left in an SUV with the bottle.
  • Investigators have not said how they identified the pair and are asking anyone with information to call Tempe police at 480-350-8311.
  • Detectives say the couple may be linked to the Romanian Travelers, a group known for coordinated theft and fraud targeting businesses across the country.
