Telangana to Hold Varuna Yagam at Nagarjunasagar on August 10

The state is organising the large Vedic ritual to seek rains to replenish reservoirs after a seasonal monsoon shortfall.

Overview

  • The Varuna Yagam was ordered by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and will culminate with his attendance at the purnahuti at 3:24 p.m. on August 10.
  • Temple authorities say 108 rithwiks and 11 homa kundas will be used and Vedic scholars from Yadagirigutta will perform the rites under Endowments Department oversight.
  • Separately, Srisailam temple in Andhra Pradesh is conducting Varuna rites from August 7–11 and has suspended several paid sevas and sparsha darshan on August 9–11 because of expected crowds.
  • Officials point to measurable water shortfalls as the motive for the rituals, with Nagarjunasagar reported around 44% of capacity and several medium and minor projects also below normal levels.
  • District and state agencies have mobilised security, sanitation and crowd-control plans for the Nagarjunasagar event and officials say the public ceremony is intended to reassure farmers and water managers while drawing visible government involvement.
