Telangana Moves to Require 25–50% EV Fleets for Schools and Large Employers, Expands E‑Bus Rollout

Ministers outlined tax waivers alongside a phased plan to electrify most state buses by 2035.

Overview

  • Officials said guidelines will soon detail a mandate for schools and organisations with sizeable staff to ensure 25–50% of their transport fleets are electric.
  • TGSRTC has hired and deployed 875 electric buses, with a further 2,800 e-buses being procured under the PM E‑DRIVE scheme for city operations.
  • The state set targets for the transport corporation of 35% electrification by 2030 and 80% by 2035, including retrofitting existing buses for routes within the Outer Ring Road.
  • Measures include 100% exemptions on road tax and registration fees for EVs, an estimated ₹900 crore revenue impact, expanded charging points in public locations and gated communities, and a request to manufacturers for a 20% subsidy to government employees buying EVs.
  • The government is considering requiring 25–50% of its own vehicle procurements to be electric as it scales enforcement of fitness and PUC compliance.
