Telangana Forms Panel to Identify and Honour Statehood Activists

The move creates a formal route to recognise people who suffered during the Telangana statehood agitation.

Overview

  • The General Administration Department issued GO Rt. No. 679 on Friday to set up a high-level committee led by government adviser K. Keshava Rao.
  • The members include Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, MLC M. Kodandaram, MLC Addanki Dayakar, former MLC S. Ramulu Naik, and Mothe Shobhan Reddy, with the GAD political secretary serving as convenor.
  • The panel will define who qualifies as 'Telangana Udyamakarulu', a term the state uses for movement protagonists, then prepare a statewide list of eligible people.
  • It will recommend the honours, courtesies, and facilities to extend to those identified, based on the criteria it drafts.
  • The order grants powers to summon officials, seek records, and hold consultations, and it directs all departments to cooperate, with a report due at the earliest in light of deaths, injuries, arrests, and jail terms during the agitation.
