Telangana Asks Andhra Pradesh to Return Five Panchayats in Meeting With Naidu

Any change to the border would require resolutions from both state assemblies followed by a law passed by Parliament.

Overview

  • On February 16, Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in Undavalli to formally request the transfer of five panchayats back to Telangana.
  • The panchayats named in the request are Yetapaka, Kannaigudem, Picchikulapadu, Purushothapatnam and Gundala.
  • Rao cited complications from the 2014 Polavaram-related transfer of seven mandals, saying travel from Bhadrachalam into the rest of Telangana requires crossing five Andhra villages.
  • Naidu told Rao he would look into the request, and no commitments or legislative steps have been announced.
  • Rao also sought five acres for Telangana at Tirumala, release of 85% funds for Peddavagu repairs, fixing the Bhadrachalam retaining wall on the Andhra side, and progress on the Sattupally–Kovvuru and Penballi–Amaravathi railway lines.
