Teens Suspected of Murder in Cheltenham Fatal Punch Released on Bail

Police seek more witnesses after a 73-year-old died following an assault linked to a branch thrown from Millennium Bridge.

  • Gloucestershire Police said Saturday that two boys aged 17 and 16 arrested on suspicion of murder have been released on bail.
  • The investigation centers on an incident around 7:30pm Wednesday, April 8, when a large branch was thrown from Cheltenham’s Millennium Bridge at a cyclist who was not hurt.
  • The victim, a man in his 70s, confronted two males on Honeybourne Way where one punched him, and he died in hospital on Friday, April 10.
  • Officers reviewed CCTV and, after a public appeal, arrested the teens in Cheltenham first on suspicion of grievous bodily harm before re-arresting them on suspicion of murder.
  • Detectives are appealing for information and ask witnesses to quote incident 430 of 8 April, with Crimestoppers available for anonymous tips, and the man’s next of kin and the coroner have been informed.
