Teens Rescued From Skelmersdale Quarry After Getting Trapped in Mud

Police say the preventable call-out diverted crews in harsh conditions at a remote site.

Overview

  • Emergency services responded on Friday night to the Brick Works quarry on Chequer Lane in Skelmersdale after a group of teenagers trespassed and became stuck in mud.
  • The operation deployed four police patrols, five fire engines and five ambulances from Lancashire Police, Lancashire Fire and Rescue and North West Ambulance Service.
  • Two casualties were freed from the mud and all five youths were rescued extremely cold and muddy with only minor injuries.
  • Officers described pitch-black, rainy, near-freezing conditions in a remote location and said the outcome could have been worse without a mobile phone to call 999.
  • Lancashire Fire and Rescue said crews from Skelmersdale, Ormskirk, Penwortham, Darwen and Preston, plus a drone team, spent about two hours on scene, as police issued fresh warnings about quarry dangers and the strain on resources.
