Teens on Trial as Jury Watches Video of Man’s Fatal Stabbing

Prosecutors say phone clips, CCTV and pathology link three teenagers to a violent January home attack that pierced the victim’s heart.

Overview

  • Three teenagers — Layton Lightfoot, Jesse Reaney and Charlie Wilcock — deny charges at Teesside Crown Court over the death of David Cuthbert on January 10.
  • This week (July 21–23) jurors were shown phone and CCTV clips that prosecutors say record parts of the assault and were shared on Snapchat.
  • A pathologist told the court the victim suffered a stab wound to the left chest that penetrated his heart and was inflicted with severe force.
  • Courtroom evidence included a police body-worn camera recording of Mr Cuthbert’s daughter calling a defendant after she saw the clip and confronting him by Snapchat.
  • Prosecutors also relied on a robbery victim’s testimony and on phone data, CCTV and an electronic tag to place the three together before the attack and the trial is continuing.
