Overview
- Emergency services were called after a 999 report and, following a call shortly after 12:46pm on Friday, July 10, five fire engines and three water rescue units were sent to the River Derwent at Darley Abbey.
- A younger teenager was removed from the water in the mid-afternoon and treated at the scene shortly before 4:30pm, officials said.
- Derby City Council confirmed the 18-year-old's body was recovered late on Friday, around 7:45–8:00pm, and police are supporting his family while officers remain at the scene.
- The multi-agency response involved Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire fire crews, Derbyshire Constabulary, East Midlands Ambulance Service and specialist police divers who joined the search.
- Fire and council leaders warned that rivers have unseen hazards such as strong currents, submerged debris and cold water shock and they urged people to follow safety guidance such as the 'Float to Live' technique and to avoid the Darley Abbey area while inquiries continue.
