Teen Wounded in Loop, Woman Found Fatally Shot on Far South Side, Raising Questions Over Gunfire Detection

Police face fresh concern about response times after the city ended its acoustic alerts program.

Overview

  • A 14-year-old boy was shot in the left foot during a teen gathering near Washington and Wabash and was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in fair condition.
  • CPD had pre-deployed officers to the area; a 911 caller reported teens fighting around 8:35 p.m., and officers reported shots fired about three minutes later.
  • Police released no suspect description and announced no shooting-related arrests, though one juvenile was arrested on allegations of battering an officer at the scene.
  • A Department of Streets and Sanitation crew found a woman shot to death about 12:15 p.m. on a remote gravel road in the 600 block of East 134th Place near the Little Calumet River.
  • Nine shell casings were recovered next to the woman, her identity and time of death remain undetermined pending an autopsy, and the location falls within an area that previously used gunshot alerts discontinued by the city on Sept. 23, 2024.
