Teen Who Killed 12-Year-Old Leo Ross Given Life With 13-Year Minimum, Identified as Kian Moulton

A judge lifted reporting restrictions to permit naming after imposing a life order in the Birmingham case.

Overview

  • Birmingham Crown Court ordered life detention with a 13-year minimum term, deducting 379 days already served and imposing a lifetime licence.
  • Leo Ross was stabbed on 21 January 2025 in Shire Country Park while walking home from school in what police concluded was a random, unprovoked attack.
  • Prosecutors said the teenager attacked elderly women in the days before the murder, including pushing an 82-year-old into water and seriously injuring a 72-year-old.
  • West Midlands Police said he lied to officers at the scene by posing as a passer-by and discarded the knife in a nearby river before CCTV work led to his arrest.
  • Following the judge’s order allowing identification from 1pm on 11 February, media on 12 February named the defendant as 15-year-old Kian Moulton.
