Teen Hiker Found Alive Five Days After Vanishing on Brazil's Pico Paraná

He reached safety after a roughly 20 km trek through dense forest without a phone.

Overview

  • Rescue officials said Roberto Farias Thomaz walked more than 12 miles to the Antonina region and arrived at a farm in Cacatu, where he borrowed a phone to contact his family.
  • More than 100 firefighters and about 300 volunteers joined the five-day search that also used aircraft with thermal imaging as rain and fog hindered operations.
  • Thomaz became separated from his group on New Year’s Day during the descent from the summit and was located on Jan. 5 before being retrieved by first responders.
  • Hospital staff reported he was lucid with mild dehydration and hematomas on his legs, with no life-threatening injuries, and his family has since reunited with him.
  • In messages shared by local media, Thomaz described hallucinations and fearing he might have died, and he thanked rescuers, volunteers and his family for their support.
