- Rescue officials said Roberto Farias Thomaz walked more than 12 miles to the Antonina region and arrived at a farm in Cacatu, where he borrowed a phone to contact his family.
- More than 100 firefighters and about 300 volunteers joined the five-day search that also used aircraft with thermal imaging as rain and fog hindered operations.
- Thomaz became separated from his group on New Year’s Day during the descent from the summit and was located on Jan. 5 before being retrieved by first responders.
