Teen Driver Identified in Fatal Tesla Crash Off Malibu Canyon Road

Investigators have not established whether speed, a mechanical problem or road conditions led to the plunge.

Overview

  • The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the victim as 16-year-old Hunter Langley, a student at Sierra Canyon School.
  • The Feb. 4 crash occurred around 7:40 a.m. just north of Potter Road when a 2018 Tesla Model S went airborne, struck a dirt ravine and tumbled about 30 feet down a steep embankment.
  • Langley was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel at approximately 7:50 a.m.
  • The California Highway Patrol’s West Valley Area office is leading the investigation, and the vehicle’s speed and any contributing mechanical or environmental factors remain unconfirmed.
  • Sierra Canyon canceled athletic events and deployed counseling resources for students as Malibu Canyon Road traffic was reduced to alternating lanes during the response.
