Teen Contractor Critically Injured After Concrete Pipe Falls at Durham Site

Regulators opened a joint inquiry to determine site safety responsibilities.

Overview

  • A concrete pipe toppled at Bellway’s Sniperley Park DH1 development in Durham, which occurred Thursday shortly before 1pm, injuring a 17-year-old contractor.
  • North East Ambulance Service sent an ambulance crew, a specialist paramedic, two clinical team leaders, and a duty officer, with the Great North Air Ambulance team assisting by road, before transport to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.
  • The Health and Safety Executive opened a joint investigation with Durham Police and inspectors visited the site Thursday, with specialist officers supporting the teenager’s family.
  • Bellway said groundworks at the development were being carried out by principal contractor Esh Group and that the injured person worked for that contractor.
  • Esh Group said it is assisting both agencies after what it described as a serious incident involving a subcontractor’s employee.
