Overview
- A 16-year-old boy was shot on Bowyer Road in Alum Rock shortly before 5.30pm on Wednesday and remains in critical condition in hospital.
- Officers arrested a 17-year-old soon after the attack and he has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and remanded to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court.
- West Midlands Police have sealed parts of the area for forensic work, carried out searches in nearby Geranium Grove and Bordesley Green, and said they do not currently believe the incident was connected to the nearby Zia Ul Quran Masjid.
- West Midlands Ambulance Service provided advanced trauma care at the scene and deployed critical care resources including an air asset before conveying the victim to hospital.
- Local councillors and community groups urged calm, appealed for anyone with doorbell, dashcam or CCTV footage to contact police quoting log 4638, and used the shooting to press for more local policing resources.
