Teen Arrested After Suspected Aerosol Explosion at Ipswich Flats

Forensics have examined the scene — enquiries will continue with the 18-year-old held in custody.

Overview

  • Police were called to Princes Street in Ipswich after reports of a suspected explosion that blew out several windows at a block of flats, with residents evacuated as a safety precaution on Friday night.
  • An 18-year-old man was arrested at about 9:05pm on suspicion of arson and criminal damage with intent to endanger life and has been taken to Martlesham Police Investigation Centre where he remains in custody.
  • Emergency crews from Suffolk Police, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service and the East of England Ambulance Service attended, cordons were put in place and motorists were diverted while the area was secured.
  • Forensic teams examined glass and debris the following morning and police say that, at this early stage, they believe an aerosol can exploded after being placed on a heat source; no injuries were reported.
  • Enquiries are ongoing and police have asked anyone with information to contact them quoting crime reference 37/45092/26, while the road closure was later lifted and local businesses reported visible glass and damage.
