Teen Arrested After Speeding Truck Kills Three on East Oakland Sidewalk

Officials have requested a blood search warrant to test for drugs or alcohol during an inquiry into whether the crash was deliberate.

Overview

  • A pickup driven by a 17-year-old mounted the sidewalk outside East Bay Market Liquor at 85th Avenue and International Boulevard and struck a group of people, killing three and injuring several others.
  • The three men were identified by the coroner as Robert Dixon, Charles Blackmon, and Miguel Sanchez Ramirez, and they were pronounced dead at the scene.
  • Bystanders restrained the suspect after the crash and police took him into custody following hospital treatment for injuries he sustained in the incident.
  • Oakland investigators say the driver was traveling at more than 50 mph in a 25 mph zone, they are seeking the suspect’s blood for toxicology, and the case has been sent to the Alameda County district attorney for charging review.
  • Community leaders and relatives have mourned the victims and officials say the crash, which follows an earlier May sidewalk incident, has raised renewed questions about pedestrian safety and enforcement in Oakland.
