Techem Finds Cold January Pushed German Heating Use Up 12.6% Versus 2025

Lower average energy prices limited the rise in heating bills.

Overview

  • Techem projects nationwide heating costs up about 10.3%, using measured January consumption and annual average energy prices.
  • Thuringia recorded the sharpest jump with consumption up 34.5% and a projected 31.7% increase in costs, followed by Brandenburg (+29.2%), Berlin (+18.1%) and Saxony (+16.5%).
  • North Rhine–Westphalia saw the smallest changes with consumption up 2.2% and costs roughly flat at +0.1%, while the Saarland rose 3.5% in use with a 1.3% cost uptick.
  • Hamburg’s consumption climbed 13.9% with an estimated 11.5% rise in costs, and Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania rose 14.6% with a 12.2% cost increase.
  • Findings draw on data from nearly two million apartments in multi-family buildings across all common energy carriers and are not weather‑adjusted to reflect the direct impact of the cold month.
