Teamsters Strike Shuts Skilled Trades at 22 CSU Campuses Over Pay Dispute

The walkout stems from a contract dispute over whether state budget conditions required CSU to pay negotiated step increases.

Overview

  • Roughly 1,100 electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, locksmiths and other maintenance staff began a four-day unfair labor practice strike on Feb. 17 across the California State University system.
  • Teamsters Local 2010 says CSU reneged on contractually promised salary steps and cost-of-living increases despite restored state funding in 2025 and additional funding in 2026.
  • CSU counters that the pay increases were expressly conditional on receiving new, ongoing state funds, says those conditions were not met and urges the union to return to bargaining.
  • The union filed an unfair labor practice charge and rallied at San Francisco State University with national Teamsters leaders, pressing CSU to honor the agreement.
  • CSU says it is bargaining in good faith and keeping campuses open, while the union alleges the system is holding large reserves and boosting executive pay instead of funding raises.
