TCU Restores Star-Telegram Credentials After Temporary Ban

Ending a roughly 10- to 12-day suspension, TCU returned full media access to the local paper as the criminal investigation into the locker-room incident continues.

Overview

  • TCU announced on Sept. 4 that it fully restored the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s athletics credentials after a series of productive discussions with the paper.
  • The credentials were pulled earlier this month after the Star-Telegram reported on an Aug. 13 locker-room altercation that led to the dismissal of senior safety Jacob Fields.
  • Fields turned himself in and was arrested on Aug. 30 on a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, and court records said the injured player suffered a brain bleed.
  • During the suspension the Star-Telegram still covered TCU’s season opener in Dublin from the stands and will have full press access for the Sept. 12 home opener.
  • The episode has raised questions about how colleges control media access, how reporters verify unnamed sources during active probes, and what limits schools may set while investigations proceed.
