Taxstone Sentenced to 37 Months for MDC Brooklyn Contraband Scheme
The judge ordered the federal term to run after Campbell’s 35-year state sentence to stress the danger of bringing drugs and weapons into jail.
Overview
- Federal judge Nicholas G. Garaufis handed down the 37-month term on Friday, May 29, 2026, and said the sentence must be served consecutively to Campbell’s 35-year state manslaughter sentence.
- Prosecutors said Campbell organized a plot to smuggle a paper 'rope' laced with synthetic cannabinoid, more than 100 strips of a synthetic opioid, about 27 bags of marijuana, 400-plus cigarettes, two lighters, a scalpel, and a phone charging cord into MDC Brooklyn.
- Campbell pleaded guilty in September to one count of conspiracy to provide and possess contraband in a prison and admitted he led the scheme while saying he sought money to pay lawyers for his manslaughter appeal.
- Defense lawyers had asked for a 25–30 month term to run concurrently while prosecutors urged a 33-month consecutive term, but Judge Garaufis imposed 37 months and criticized Campbell’s courtroom demeanor as showing a lack of seriousness.
- The new consecutive federal time adds to Campbell’s existing federal and state penalties, including a prior 115-month federal gun sentence that runs concurrently with the 35-year state term, and it could extend the period before he is eligible for release as appeals proceed.
