Overview
- The state government and Larsen & Toubro formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday, June 4, committing Rs 18,600 crore to three projects across Kancheepuram, Coimbatore and Kattupalli.
- The MoU allocates about Rs 15,000 crore for a Kancheepuram data centre (estimated 500 direct jobs), Rs 2,500 crore for an electronics and electronic systems plant in Coimbatore (≈2,000 jobs) and Rs 1,100 crore to expand the Kattupalli shipyard in Tiruvallur (≈5,700 jobs).
- Officials stressed the deal is a formal investment commitment rather than a completed project and said regulatory approvals, detailed project reports, financing and construction schedules remain to be finalised.
- L&T already operates industrial facilities in Tamil Nadu and the Kattupalli yard has handled naval and commercial repairs; the expansion is pitched to support shipbuilding, offshore wind work and broader maritime services.
- State leaders presented the MoU as the first industrial pact of the Vijay administration and said it will strengthen digital infrastructure, boost manufacturing and create direct and indirect jobs while advancing the state's long‑term growth target.
