Tamil Nadu Sets Late-January Launch for Free HPV Vaccination, Starting in Four High-Incidence Districts

The state aims to protect girls aged 9–14 through a two-dose schedule funded with ₹36 crore.

Overview

  • Health Minister Ma. Subramanian said the tender is finalised, procurement is nearing completion, and training for doctors and nurses has begun.
  • About 27,000 girls will receive first doses in Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruvannamalai and Dharmapuri.
  • The programme will expand to all 38 districts to reach roughly 3.38 lakh girls.
  • The rollout starts with 14-year-olds before covering the wider 9–14 cohort, with two doses per child.
  • Vaccination will begin in government and government-aided schools, and officials say Tamil Nadu will be the first Indian state to offer the HPV shot free while private doses cost around ₹2,000.
