Tamil Nadu Reaffirms Two-Language Policy, Rejects Three-Language Rule

The stance tests how far states can diverge from the Union’s NEP in schools.

Overview

  • Tamil Nadu’s school education minister A. Rajmohan, speaking Tuesday, said the TVK government will not adopt a three‑language formula even after CBSE applied it to Classes 9 and 10.
  • He cited fears of Hindi imposition and said education’s place on the Concurrent List allows states to set their own school language policy.
  • The Union government says the National Education Policy is flexible and does not make Hindi compulsory, framing the three‑language plan as support for multilingual learning.
  • The state will review conditions before joining the PM SHRI school scheme and it alleges the Centre has withheld Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan funds for two years.
  • Separately, the department released nine new textbooks for Grades 1–3 on Monday and set June 1 for school reopening with books to be handed out that day.
