Tamil Nadu Parties Urge Delay to April 29 CWMA Meeting Over Poll Timing and Mekedatu Concerns

They say officials should not take interstate water decisions without newly elected leaders at the table.

Overview

  • PMK, CPM and CPI, which issued statements Monday, asked the Centre to postpone the 50th Cauvery Water Management Authority meeting set for April 29 in New Delhi.
  • They argued that recent elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry leave officials without guidance from incoming governments.
  • Officials have not announced any change to the timing or agenda of the April 29 session.
  • PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss warned that Karnataka may try to raise the Mekedatu dam for discussion and sought a firm assurance it will not be taken up.
  • He said routine releases to Tamil Nadu under Cauvery Tribunal and Supreme Court orders can proceed and noted that a 2019 Mekedatu project report forwarded to the CWMA did not move forward after opposition in Tamil Nadu.
