Tall Ships Fill Boston Harbor as Sail Boston 2026 Kicks Off

The fleet’s arrival puts city transit and security plans to the test as a week of public ship tours, concerts and two fireworks nights begins.

Overview

  • The Parade of Sail led by the USS Constitution sailed into Boston Harbor on Saturday, July 11, and dozens of tall ships and military vessels have tied up at multiple piers across the city.
  • More than 50–60 ships from over 20 countries are participating in the finale of the Sail250 tour, with many vessels open for free public boarding during posted hours and subject to each captain’s discretion.
  • City and event officials deployed stadium-style security measures including bag checks, marine safety zones, drone detection, street closures and boosted MBTA service to manage the large crowds.
  • The festival runs through July 16 and features daily ship tours, a free Seaport festival, crew parades, a Sail Boston Cup soccer tournament, and fireworks on Saturday and Wednesday nights.
  • Organizers project very large attendance—some estimates up to four million across the week—creating major economic opportunity for waterfront businesses and logistical pressure for neighborhoods and transit systems as the city manages berths and visitor flows.
