Overview
- The Elissa left the Port of Galveston on Monday, June 8, beginning an approximately three-month coastal voyage to take part in Sail250 and July 3–7 events in New York Harbor.
- Crew and ship leaders said the 1877 iron barque was repowered with a new diesel engine and new generating sets to meet the demands of the extended trip.
- Fourteen core crew will remain aboard for the full voyage while rotating volunteers will keep about 40 people on board at all times to manage sailing, maintenance, and public programs.
- The ship will make scheduled port calls including Pensacola, Savannah, Boston, and will lead Class A tall ships into New York Harbor on July 4 as part of the largest flotilla of historic vessels for the 250th celebration.
- Operated by the Galveston Historical Foundation as a working floating museum, Elissa’s voyage reconnects the city to national maritime history and offers deck tours, sailing experiences, and educational programs before the ship returns to Galveston in late August.
