Talgo Says Imminent Renfe Deal Will Clear Avril Liability and Propel Capacity Push

Resolving the Renfe dispute will clear a major liability, freeing Talgo to focus on recapitalisation alongside an industrial expansion plan.

Overview

  • Talgo told shareholders on Tuesday that it expects to sign a binding settlement with state operator Renfe in the coming weeks to resolve delivery issues for the Avril trains and remove the related financial uncertainty.
  • Company management said the pending settlement includes a reported €116 million indemnity for Avril delays while emphasising that the deal is not yet signed and remains developing.
  • Talgo has already strengthened its balance sheet with about €150 million of fresh equity, convertible bonds, a €770 million syndicated loan and a €500 million guarantees facility with partial CESCE cover to support international contracts.
  • The firm reported a record order book of €6.307 billion driven by recent export wins and acceptances, and announced plans to double production capacity by end-2028, create a new Euskadi R&D centre, invest roughly €100 million in production and hire about 200 people.
  • Public and regional shareholders rescued Talgo after the Avril setbacks, and management is pressing to be treated on equal terms for Renfe’s forthcoming tender for up to 40 trains, a race that will influence local jobs, suppliers and Spain’s rail industrial base.
