Overview
- The Talbot Fire was first reported near French Meadows Road west of Lake Tahoe on Wednesday and quickly expanded while officials issued evacuation warnings for parts of the Tahoe National Forest.
- Early estimates varied from about 16 acres to as much as 200 acres before more detailed mapping revised the size to roughly 75 acres with Cal Fire reporting 15% containment in a Thursday afternoon update.
- Placer County law enforcement placed Tahoe Cedars and other recreation areas under evacuation warnings and ordered all campgrounds in the French Meadows area cleared to give residents and visitors time to leave if conditions worsen.
- Fire crews from Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service, local districts and cooperating agencies have been assigned to the incident with night-flying aircraft, smokejumpers, brush trucks and water tenders assisting containment efforts.
- The blaze is burning in steep, heavily timbered terrain that limits access, no structure damage has been reported, the cause remains under investigation, and forecasters warn thunderstorms, lightning and outflow winds could complicate suppression or spark new ignitions.
