Take-Two Lays Off Head of AI and Parts of In-House Team

The move undercuts recent pledges to use generative tools for efficiency, leaving the company’s AI direction in doubt.

Overview

  • Luke Dicken said in a LinkedIn post that his role as Head of AI ended along with members of his team, and several colleagues posted similar departure notices.
  • Take-Two declined to comment when asked about the cuts, and neither the company nor employees specified how many people were affected.
  • CEO Strauss Zelnick recently told investors the company is actively embracing generative AI with hundreds of pilots to drive efficiencies and reduce costs.
  • Zelnick has also said generative AI has no role in Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 6 and argued the tech cannot by itself create hit games.
  • Dicken’s group drew heavily from Zynga’s applied AI unit and spent about seven years building tools like procedural content and machine learning for game development, and he is now seeking new roles for affected teammates.
