Takashi Yamazaki’s 'Nue' Lands at 20th Century Studios

The studio deal pairs Yamazaki with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free to develop an original epic that leverages his recent Oscar and box-office momentum.

Overview

  • Multiple outlets reported Tuesday that 20th Century Studios has officially acquired Nue and will develop the original epic with Takashi Yamazaki attached to direct.
  • Ridley Scott’s Scott Free banner will produce with Michael Pruss while Japanese partners Robot Communications and Toho-Tombo and producer Amie Horiuchi are also credited on the project.
  • Yamazaki has described Nue as a long-held personal project but the studio and producers are keeping plot, casting and schedule details under wraps as the film is in early development.
  • The announcement follows Yamazaki’s rise after Godzilla Minus One, which won an Academy Award for visual effects, and comes while he readies the Godzilla sequel Godzilla Minus Zero for U.S. release on November 6.
  • The transpacific producing lineup signals continued Hollywood interest in Yamazaki’s work and could strengthen 20th Century’s genre slate, though the timing of Nue is uncertain given Yamazaki’s other projects such as Grandgear.
