T-Mobile Builds Real-Time Call Translation Into Its Network, Opens Beta

Selected postpaid customers will try the free spring test by activating *87* mid-call.

Overview

  • The carrier’s network-native AI translates calls in more than 50 languages without apps or special hardware, and only one participant needs to be on T-Mobile.
  • Live Translation works over VoLTE, VoNR, and VoWiFi across 4G and 5G, including basic flip phones, with a voice trigger (“Hey T-Mobile”) expected for testers later this spring.
  • T-Mobile says the capability is implemented as software within its IMS core, with no new tower equipment and no datacenter call routing for processing.
  • The company states it does not save call recordings or transcripts and will not train models on customer audio, as reporters spotlight ongoing privacy questions given T-Mobile’s past breaches and an FCC settlement.
  • Beta sign-ups are open now with limited spots, emergency numbers like 911 and 988 are excluded, international use depends on select roaming partners, accuracy is not guaranteed, and pricing for the broader launch later in 2026 remains unspecified.
