Syracuse Standoff Ends With Surrender After Three Officers Injured

Prosecutors plan attempted murder charges pending evidence processing at Pioneer Homes.

Overview

  • The suspect surrendered at 3:15 p.m. Saturday after roughly nine hours barricaded in a Pioneer Homes apartment, police said.
  • The confrontation began around 6:30 a.m. with reports of a man menacing residents and cutting a dog with a machete.
  • When officers arrived, the man fired from an apartment window, striking two officers in the arm and a third in the hand, and all were treated at Upstate Medical in stable condition.
  • Police issued shelter-in-place alerts, evacuated nearby buildings and closed streets as Syracuse SWAT, state police, county deputies and federal agents secured the area near I-81 during Syracuse University’s graduation weekend.
  • Chief Mark Rusin said investigators are processing evidence and expect attempted murder, assault and weapons charges, with arraignment planned Sunday.
