Sydney Boy, 16, Charged With Five Terrorism Offences After Device Search

The case shows how digital evidence can move a youth matter into terrorism law.

Overview

  • The 16-year-old, charged Tuesday with five counts, was accused after a review of seized devices allegedly uncovered extremist material and documents on how to carry out an attack.
  • Police said the boy held a mixed ideology and outlined plans for acts of violence, according to an Australian Federal Police statement.
  • The NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team, which includes NSW Police, the AFP, ASIO and the NSW Crime Commission, searched his Inner West home in December after online threat reports and allegedly found a gel blaster and a flick knife.
  • He now faces one count of collecting documents likely to facilitate a terrorist act, two counts of making such documents, and two counts of possessing violent extremist material.
  • The teenager is due in the NSW Children's Court on Wednesday, and the most serious charges carry maximum penalties of up to 15 years in prison.
