- Germany’s statistics office said Monday that about 329,900 Germans lived in Switzerland at the start of 2025, followed by 239,500 in Austria and 131,800 in Spain.
- Compared with a year earlier, the German populations grew by 1.9% in Switzerland, 2.9% in Austria, and 3.0% in Spain.
- Over ten years, Germans in Switzerland rose 10.7% and in Austria 40.5%, while Spain remains 2.4% below its level a decade ago.
- In Austria the German community skews younger, while in Spain it skews older, with 13.3% aged 65+ in Austria versus 26.8% in Spain.
- The counts draw on Eurostat and Swiss data as of January 1, 2025 (Switzerland: December 31, 2024), exclude dual nationals, and have gaps for some countries such as the UK (2021) and Poland (2020), which limits full comparisons.
